122. John TILSON

John Tilson was a very kind hearted, peaceable, industrious man, a great worker indeed; a man of excellent common sense. Naturally of a cultivated mind, became more educated than many of his neighbors. With such surroundings and his old fashioned notions, but few would have done more for their children. He was one of the wealthiest men of Halifax in 1815. He built a large house in the west part of the town. His son, Capt. William, occupied it until his death. From this house his son John and wife migrated in 1822 to their western home, near Quincy, Ill. The grandson, William Tilson, now occupies the old home (1896).

John Tilson, Jr., enlisted 1775, to stay 6 weeks, till Jan., 1776, at Roxbury or Boston. Received 18 shillings from town of Halifax. He enlisted for 3 mos. at Bristol, 1776; received 18 shillings. A list of soldiers who went to Bristol or Warren upon the alarm, Dec., 1776, gives John Tilson, Jr., 6 shillings.
