1 NOTE The first of the name on this side of the ocean, 27 March 1637, William 
2 CONC was apprenticed to John Holmes of New Plymouth in America. He was 
2 CONC transferred 1 July 1637 to John Coombs of Plymouth. From this it may be 
2 CONC inferred that he was a minor. He settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts, 
2 CONC where he was admitted freeman on 6 Jun 1654. He was appointed Surveyor of 
2 CONC highways in 1654; he was a member of the Plymouth militia in 1643. 
2 CONC William was ordered to pay the debts of his master, Mr. Coombs, and to 
2 CONC take care of his children, August 1670 in a will dated 8 March, with 
2 CONC inventory taken 14 March. He resided in Plymouth until about 1660, when 
2 CONC he moved to Acushnet, Bristol county, Massachusetts, where he died in 
2 CONC 1684.

2 CONT The earliest record that we have relating to William Spooner, is the 
2 CONC assignment of articles indenturing him by John Holmes to John Coombs, as 
2 CONC is seen in Plymouth Colony Records, Vol. XII, p. 19, as follows:

2 CONT "Whereas, William Spooner of Colchester, in the County of Essex by this 
2 CONC Indenture, bearing date the twenty-seaventh day of March Anno Dmi., 1637, 
2 CONC in the thirteenth year of his Magisty's Raigne, hath put himself 
2 CONC apprentice with John Holmes, of New Plymouth, in America, gent. from the 
2 CONC first day of May next after the date of the said Indenture unto thend 
2 CONC terme of six yeares thence ensuing with diuers other couenant both pts to 
2 CONC be pformed eich to other by the Indent it doth more plainly appear.   Now 
2 CONC the said John Holmes with the consent likeinge of the said William 
2 CONC Spooner hath the first day of July assigned and set ouer the said William 
2 CONC Spooner unto John Coombs of New Plymouth, aforesd gent. for all the 
2 CONC residue of his terme vnexpired to serue the sd John Coomes, and the sd 
2 CONC John Coomes in then of his said terme shall giue the said William Spooner 
2 CONC one comely suit of apparell for holy days and one suit for working days, 
2 CONC and twelve bushells of Indian Wheate, and a good seruiceable muskett, 
2 CONC bandaliers and sord fitt for service."

2 CONT It thus appears that William Spooner began life in America as an 
2 CONC apprentice to a Mr. John Coombs, a well-to-do citizen of New Plymouth. 
2 CONC His age at the time of his indenture is unknown, but it is natural to 
2 CONC suppose that he was then in his minority.
2 CONT 
2 CONT William Spooner then, "of Colchester, in the county of Essex, " (England 
2 CONC or Massachusetts), arrived in the New Plymouth settlement early in the 
2 CONC year 1637.   Whence he came, whether with Ann Spooner from Leyden, 
2 CONC whether direct from the mother country, or whether - which we think the 
2 CONC most probable - from the little embryo town of Colchester, Massachusetts 
2 CONC Colony, is not known.   Let this much be said, however, that considering 
2 CONC his youth, (he probably was not more than sixteen or seventeen years old 
2 CONC at the time of his indenture), and considering also the fact that a Mr. 
2 CONC Ann Spooner (doubtless from Leyden, Holland) was in Salem in 1637, it is 
2 CONC more than probable that william made the journey to America with Ann 
2 CONC Spooner and Thomas Spooner, whom we suppose to have been his mother and 
2 CONC brother, and that, on their arrivalin this country, the family separated, 
2 CONC Ann and Thomas settling tin Salem, and William seeking his fortune first 
2 CONC in the little Colchester settlement and subsequently in New Plymouth.

2 CONT William Spooner's life after his apprenticeship to Mr. Coombs, we have, 
2 CONC from the records, a tolerably well connected account.   From the various 
2 CONC orders of the Court, we conclude that he was a faithful and competent 
2 CONC steward, entrusted with the administration of his master's estate and the 
2 CONC custody of his children.   These were no common marks of confidence, 
2 CONC especially amoung the early New England settlers, with whom sturdy 
2 CONC self-reliance was one of the first and greatest of virtues.
2 CONT 
2 CONT In the list of August, 1643, William Spooner is mentioned as one "of all 
2 CONC the males that are able to beare arms, from xvi years old to 60 years 
2 CONC with in the several townships."   He was proponded to take up his 
2 CONC freedom, June 7, 1653," and was "sworn and admitted June 6, 1654," and at 
2 CONC the same time was appointed Surveyor of Highways.   He also served on the 
2 CONC "Grand Enquest" 1657 and 1666.

2 CONT He continued to reside in Plymouth until about 1660, when he removed to 
2 CONC the new settlement at Acushnet in the Dartmouth purchase.   Here he held 
2 CONC lands in his own name and an interest in the purchase, which were 
2 CONC confirmed to him and to his heirs in their proprietory rights by his 
2 CONC will.   His lands and the grants made to his sons and grandson, were 
2 CONC situated near The-Head-of-the-River, somewhat to the north and east, 
2 CONC thence to the south on the east side of the river Acushnet; a small 
2 CONC portion of the inheritance of his son, John, was the West or New Bedford 
2 CONC side of the Acushnet, and they held land on Sconticut Neck and at 
2 CONC Nasquatucket.

2 CONT It is traditionally claimed, (and this claim seems to be well founded,) 
2 CONC that William and his sons built the first mill within Dartmouth bounds, 
2 CONC which was located in what is now Acushnet village.

2 CONT William Spooner's educational advantages in the way of "book learning," 
2 CONC etc., were certainly very limited.   His will, in common with many of the 
2 CONC instruments executed by the early colonists, bears the "mark" of 
2 CONC illiteracy.

1 NOTE Samuel Spooner inherited from his father a large tract of land to the 
2 CONC east of the river Acushnet in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.   He preserved 
2 CONC his possessions intact, increasing them from time to time by purchase, 
2 CONC and transferring them finally to his son Elnathan, free from encumbrance. 
2 CONC The house in which he lived, together with a large part of the land 
2 CONC connected with it, remained in the family until 1855 - altogether, a 
2 CONC period of about two hundred years - when it was sold by Lemuel Spooner, 
2 CONC to a Mr. Dillingham.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Samuel was a farmer.   He held several minor town offices.  He was a 
2 CONC regular attendant on church worship at Acushnet.
2 CONT 
2 CONT He worshiped at the Congregational Church of Acushnet, which was formed 
2 CONC early in the last century.  Ricketson says: "The meeting-house, taken 
2 CONC down a few years since, having been long unoccupied and in a dilapidated 
2 CONC condition, stood upon the hill about half a mile to the eastward of the 
2 CONC village of Acushnet. The old grave-yard, however, still remains, - one of 
2 CONC the most ancient and interesting burial-places in the Old Colony 
2 CONC domaine."   In this cemetery were interred the remains of Elnathan, and 
2 CONC of his wife and his grand-daughter, Elizabeth Spooner.

1 NOTE Daniel Spooner went from Dartmouth to Newport, Rhode Island, where he was 
2 CONC admitted a freeman of the colony, May 1732, and where he carried on the 
2 CONC business of house-carpenter in company with his brother, Wing Spooner. he 
2 CONC returned to New Bedford after a time.   He removed to Hardwick, prior to 
2 CONC June 16, 1748, when he sold a lot near the Barre line, "granted orginally 
2 CONC to Mr. Keith," and adjoingl land of Co. Willis.   In a deed of July 14, 
2 CONC 1750, he is described as of Nichewoag (Petersham), and must have been a 
2 CONC resident of Petersham before April 2, 1749.   On that date, both Daniel 
2 CONC and his wife were received into membership of the First Church of that 
2 CONC town on letters from the Church of Dartmouth.   On July 11, 1750, he was 
2 CONC chosen one of the Deacons of First Church, Petersham, and held this 
2 CONC office many years.
2 CONT 
2 CONT He was an active, through-going reliable man, devoted to his family and 
2 CONC friends.   As a citizen, he was ever alert to the interests of his town 
2 CONC and the welfare of his country.   In all the trying times of the 
2 CONC Revolutionary conflict, although then beyond the allotted age of man, he 
2 CONC took a most decided interest and gave his full influence in behalf of his 
2 CONC country.   He, and his sons and sons-in-law, were all of them, patriots. 
2 CONC In the town offices of Petersham, the Deacon served in on capacity or 
2 CONC another, from 1755 to 1768.   an addition to the village was laid out for 
2 CONC him.
2 CONT 
2 CONT As an evidence of his vigorous old age, it is related of him, "that after 
2 CONC he had passed his ninetieth year, he made the journey to Vermont on 
2 CONC horseback to visit his sons."
2 CONT 
2 CONT In his family, while he was an ample provider, indulgent and kindly, 
2 CONC giving to his children all the educational advantages afforded by the 
2 CONC neighborhood, yet he was a rigid disciplinarian.  He was largely governed 
2 CONC by the principle that "He that chasteneth rod hateth his son; but he that 
2 CONC loveth him, chasteneth him betimes." A great-grand-son of his relates 
2 CONC that Daniel was "a carpenter and joiner, and worked much from home during 
2 CONC the week, and on his return home Saturday night, he would call up his 
2 CONC large family of boys, and, without any inqury, would give each of them a 
2 CONC whipping, presuming that, by their conduct through the week, they had 
2 CONC deserved it.

2 CONT The homestead of Deacon Spooner, in Petersham, is yet standing, and is 
2 CONC owned by a member of the family.  "It is a two-story frame building, 
2 CONC 26x40, posts 17 feet, making roof quarter pitch; cornice 14 inches; front 
2 CONC door, 6 panels, with sidc-lights; the interior well finished.  His land 
2 CONC had frontage on the roads leading to Hardwick and Barre."

2 CONC Long Plain grave yard.   He learned the weaver's trade, and lived on his 
2 CONC father's place, which he inherited, until by standing surety for his 
2 CONC brother-in-law, Nathaniel Sheperd, he lost his homestead.   He then, by 
2 CONC deed dated June 25, 1741, purchased a farm at the Long Plain (in 
2 CONC Acushnet) from Joseph Taber, Jr., with one acre only of cleared land. 
2 CONC Here he lived in a log house until late in life, when he was taken into 
2 CONC the family of his grandson, Hon. Alden Spooner, who built on the same 
2 CONC site.   He was, during his later years, insane and sometimes violently 
2 CONC so.   According to tradition, he was of an enterprising and adventurous 
2 CONC disposition, very fond of trading and often losing property by this 
2 CONC propensity.

2 CONT He was a man of usefulness and highly esteemed by his townsmen.   He 
2 CONC served many years in various Town fices.

1 NOTE Like his brothers, Wing entered the army and fought in the wars of his 
2 CONC country. More fortunate than his brothers, however, he became a soldier 
2 CONC of very considerable merit, so that, early in his military career, he was 
2 CONC elevated from the ranks and given the command of a Company.

2 CONT At the breaking-out of the French and Indian war, Wing, then only 
2 CONC nineteen years of age, enlisted in the Company of Capt. Stone. In 1758 he 
2 CONC was transferred to the Company of Capt. Alexander Dalrymple in which 
2 CONC Company he had a long service.

2 CONT When the troubles arose between the Colonies and the mother country, Wing 
2 CONC Spooner was amoung the first in his village to condemn the oppressive 
2 CONC measures resorted to by England, and to advocate the cause of 
2 CONC independence and revolution. An ultra Whig from conviction, he showed 
2 CONC himself a true patriot, both by precept and example. He was active and 
2 CONC efficient in raising volunteers and in helping to devise ways and means 
2 CONC for the prosecution of the war. So great was his patriotic ardor, that he 
2 CONC caused his two eldest sons to enlist in the Federal service while they 
2 CONC were mere youths and not legally required to bear arms.

2 CONT Wing was also honored in peace. He held several important official 
2 CONC positions in Petersham, where he resided. He showed good capacity in his 
2 CONC management of his various public trusts.

2 CONT His house in Petersham is still standing on the New Salem road, about a 
2 CONC half-mile west of Petersham, and in this house he and his wife passed the 
2 CONC entire forty-eight years of their wedded life.

1 NOTE Ebenezer Spooner was the eldest son of Thomas Spooner, of Plymouth. In

2 CONT In Ebenezer's life and character we note a feature which, as it does not 
2 CONC seem to have been possessed by any other member of the family, entitles 
2 CONC him to be spoken of apart from others. So far as is known, he was the 
2 CONC only one of the family who did not side with the colonists in their 
2 CONC struggle for independence. And not only this, but he was a pronounced 
2 CONC Tory and loyalist, and from the first mutterings of discontent in 1765, 
2 CONC until, in 1776, when he was forced to flee his home, Ebenezer was a 
2 CONC consistent and strenuous opponent of everything but entire obedience to 
2 CONC the British Government. Driven from his family and possessions by the 
2 CONC strength of public sentiment, he sought refuse within the British lines 
2 CONC in Boston. He was commissioned a Lieutenant in the third Company of 
2 CONC "American Loyal Associates," under the command of Brigadier-General 
2 CONC Timothy Ruggles. Embarking with the British army at the time of the 
2 CONC evacuation of Boston (March 17, 1776), he fell ill (whether from the 
2 CONC effect of a wound or disease is not known), and died soon after.

2 CONT Far from condemning Ebenezer Spooner for his part in the Revolution, we 
2 CONC think that the course he took is rather a point in his favor. The fact 
2 CONC that he took the unpopular instead of the popular side, may not, perhaps, 
2 CONC do very great credit to his discretion or to his worldly wisdom, but it 
2 CONC certainly does do great credit to his independence and sincerity, and, we 
2 CONC think, pronounces a not unfavorable verdict on his character in general, 
2 CONC for what truer test can there be of the rectitude of a man's character 
2 CONC than his readiness to offer up his life and his possessions in sacrifice 
2 CONC to his opinions? A man who shows such a readiness, and who dares calumny 
2 CONC and persecutions for opinion's sake, who finally surrenders his life in 
2 CONC combating what he honestly thinks to be error, was not, we must conclude, 
2 CONC negatively honest and upright, but positively so.

2 CONC the trade of shoe-maker with his father, and carried on an extensive 
2 CONC manufacturing business. In this and other business he was very successful 
2 CONC and accumulated a handsome competency.

2 CONT He was a man of fine address, well educated, and of an evenly balanced 
2 CONC mind, which gave him great influence in town affairs. He contributed 
2 CONC liberally of his means and devoted much of his time to advancing the 
2 CONC interests of his native town.

2 CONT He was a member of the First Church of Plymouth. He avoided notoriety, in 
2 CONC no sense of the word ever sought position, would not countenance the use 
2 CONC of his name as a candidate for any public office; yet, on some occasions, 
2 CONC he accepted such trusts when popular demand and duty seemed to require 
2 CONC that he should. In all these positions he evinced good judgement and 
2 CONC reflected credit upon those who called him to their service.

2 CONT Died at Plymouth, on Lord's day morning, the Hon. Ephraim Spooner.

2 CONT It would not merely be injustice to the deceased, but injury to the 
2 CONC living, to suffer the life of a man distinguished by such pre-eminent 
2 CONC usefulness and active benevolence as was that of Dea. Ephraim Spooner, to 
2 CONC pass unnoticed.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Dea. Spooner, by his native beneficent disposition, suavity of manners, 
2 CONC and constant readiness to oblige, early commended himself to the general 
2 CONC public. In the intercourse of social life, the expressions of his 
2 CONC civility and kindness were uncommonly ardent, and to strangers might 
2 CONC appear, to be somewhat overstrained; but they who intimately knew him, 
2 CONC can vouch with great confidence that he never made a tender of service in 
2 CONC which he was not sincere, nor dispensed a favor that did not flow 
2 CONC spontaneously from the heart, and it may be safely added, that he never 
2 CONC intentionally did a wrong thing nor thought a mean one. His 
2 CONC fellow-townsmen, impressed with his worth and assiduity, introduced him 
2 CONC into the various respectable offices of the town, and his election as 
2 CONC Town Clerk for fifty-two years in succession, and which he retained until 
2 CONC his death, amidst the struggles and conflicts of party, satisfactorily 
2 CONC evinces the upright and faithful manner with which he discharged the 
2 CONC respective offices he sustained.

2 CONT In opposition to the iniquitous system of policy adopted by Great Britain 
2 CONC toward her colonies, his whole soul was engaged. As his industry was 
2 CONC continued, nothing in his power was left unessayed to promote, in his 
2 CONC language, the glorious cause, and the writer of this article could 
2 CONC mention instances of sacrifice; he offered to the shrine of his country, 
2 CONC and of wonderful exertion, he made to procure subsistence for the 
2 CONC indigent during the distressing period of the war of the Revolution, that 
2 CONC would excite the admiration of all men acquainted with common principles 
2 CONC of human action. But. his patriotism, though in a high degree zealous, 
2 CONC had not the least tincture of bitterness, and in the distribution of his 
2 CONC charities, party feeling had no participation a pure philanthrophy seemed 
2 CONC to have marked him for her own.

2 CONT Universal good will being so conscious a feature in the character of 
2 CONC Deacon Spooner, it is unnecessary to state the warmth of his aflection in 
2 CONC the relation of husband and parent, or the ardor of his attachment as a 
2 CONC friend.
2 CONT 
2 CONT In the year 1790 he was appointed by the Executive Council justice of 
2 CONC what is called the old Court of Common Pleas, and held this office till 
2 CONC that Court was established. Being educated a merchant, his friends cannot 
2 CONC claim for him great information in legal science; but a quick natural 
2 CONC discernment, and inflexible rectitude of intention, generally guided him 
2 CONC to correct decisions. If any mistaken bias was discovered in his 
2 CONC opinions, it was unconsciously produced by his strong sympathies with the 
2 CONC unfortunate.

2 CONT He represented the town of Plymouth in the Legislature several years with 
2 CONC his usual activity and perseverance, and finished his political career as 
2 CONC a member of the Executive Council.
2 CONT 
2 CONT But the highest point in the character of Dea. Spooner is yet to be 
2 CONC named. He was from full conviction a Christian, and for more than fifty 
2 CONC years made a public profession of his religion, and for thirty-four years 
2 CONC officiated in the office of Deacon at the altar of the First Church of 
2 CONC Christ in Plymouth, and the first in New England, without blemish. 
2 CONC Imbibing the heavenly temper of his Master, like him he went about doing 
2 CONC good whenever opportunity presented, without cold calculation on the 
2 CONC measure of his ability; and in the meekness of his dis-position, and 
2 CONC mildness of answer, resembled his beloved disciple.

2 CONT His piety was without bigotry, and big devotion without enthusiasm. No 
2 CONC obtrusive polemic divinity; no metaphysical disquisition on the nature of 
2 CONC faith perplexed the simplicity of his creed, or alienated him from his 
2 CONC fellow Christians; piety to God and benevolence to man, being, with him 
2 CONC the sole test of orthodoxy and discipleship.

2 CONT But about four weeks before his own death, Dea. Spooner buried his wife 
2 CONC with whom he, had lived fifty-four years in the most entire harmony, 
2 CONC walking cheerfully together in the christian course, and in the 
2 CONC ordinances of the Gospel; and the pious fortitude and calm resignation he 
2 CONC exhibited on the occasion, will not admit of doubt that they are again 
2 CONC united in shouting the divine praises.

2 CONT Accept, venerable shade, this small tribute to the memory of thy 
2 CONC friendship, greatly beloved in life, deeply lamented in death.

2 CONT  Mrs. Spooner, it was said, at the time of her death:

2 CONC blessed God, her life was a comment on her profession, displaying the 
2 CONC virtues of industry, charity and discretion, and the graces of piety, 
2 CONC humanity and resignation to the divine will, the sum of all religion. As 
2 CONC the natural result of a life habituated to the exercises of benevolence 
2 CONC and devotion, when the last solemn scene approached, she quietly resigned 
2 CONC her soul into the hands of her merciful Creator, in humble hope of that 
2 CONC eternal rest promised by the great Savior of man to his faithful

2 CONT Ephraim Spooner was son of Thomas and Mary (Nelson) Spooner, and was 
2 CONC descended from William Spooner, who came from Colchester, England, and 
2 CONC settled in Plymouth in 1636. He was born in Plymouth in 1735, and for 
2 CONC some years was partner in business with Thomas Davis. On the 26th of 
2 CONC October, 1775, he was appointed associate justice of the Inferior Court 
2 CONC on Common Pleas, holding that office until July 5, 1790, when he was 
2 CONC appointed judge of the Court of Common Pleas for Plymouth County, holding 
2 CONC his seat until the Court was abolished, June 21, 1811. He was at various 
2 CONC times Representative, member of the Executive Council, and many years 
2 CONC Deacon of the First Church. He died in Plymouth, March 22, 1818.

1 NOTE Jasper E. Spooner was a young teen (14/15) during the Civil War where he 
2 CONC served with Campbell's Independent Siege Artillery, guarding the Salt 
2 CONC Marshes area of Port St. Marks, Florida. Since refrigeration was not an 
2 CONC option, salt was a vital necessity for preservation of foods in the hot, 
2 CONC humid temps of the South. Jasper was serving with two brothers in this 
2 CONC regiment. This regiment was made up of the wounded soldiers, young boys 
2 CONC and older men.

1 NOTE Josh Spooner worked with timber, sawmills and the production of lumber in 
2 CONC Southwest Georgia and FL.. He was accidentally killed at a sawmill in FL. 
2 CONC Shortly after he and Esther married he commissioned a grand house for her 
2 CONC at the Mayhaw crossroads. The house was built with a wrap-around porch 
2 CONC and high off the ground. The front gives an impression of being round in 
2 CONC shape. It was in this house that their only child was born and died 3 
2 CONC years later with pneumonia. The house has recently been restored by its 
2 CONC present owners, the Cobbs. IDR 1998.

2 CONT Zoath was a mariner in 1786. [Deed dated Sept. 9, 1786. Bristol County, 
2 CONC Massachusetts Book 66, p. 39]

2 CONT Zoath moved to Georgia, as did so many pioneers, looking for farm land. 
2 CONC He was a recipient in the 1837 Land Lottery. Records indicate he received 
2 CONC 202 and one-half acres on Sep 25, 1837. After staying in Screven County, 
2 CONC Georgia long enough for his dau Elizabeth to marry a local, William Jacob 
2 CONC Griner, Zoath moved on to Decatur, Georgia. He is mentioned in the 1850's 
2 CONC GA Census, (Decatur Co.), Page 70, Aug. 5, 1850, Mr. Spooner, age 90 yrs.

2 CONT Zoath was buried on the old Spooner Plantation at Dog Town near Tired 
2 CONC Creek out from Attapulgus, Georgia. Markers have been destroyed.

2 CONT His will was filed Aug. 2, 1869. He was buried at the Old Spooner

1 NOTE Benjamin Willis was a graduate of Harvard. After graduating, he returned 
2 CONC to his native town, Bridgewater, Massachusetts, where he lived as a 
2 CONC farmer. He appears to have been a man of a cast of mind much above the 
2 CONC average, and yet his talent was never brought before the public, or given 
2 CONC to its service through any efforts or ambition of his won. His happiness 
2 CONC and his life were on his farm.
2 CONT 
2 CONT We find him, though, brought before the public, and at periods of time 
2 CONC serving in official positions of honor with great faithfulness and 
2 CONC credit. To the town he have his services in its offices, as he was called 
2 CONC upon from time to time. At a later period in life, 1779, he was chosen, 
2 CONC with Nathan Mitchell, Esq., to represent Bridgewater in the convention 
2 CONC called to draft a constitution for the Commonwealth. Soon after the 
2 CONC ratification of this Constitution he was appointed Chief Justice of the 
2 CONC Court of Common Pleas of Plymouth County, which office he held well up to 
2 CONC the time of his death. In earlier life, he had the rank of Major in the 
2 CONC county militia. His was a long, uambitious life. Inheriting a large 
2 CONC landed estate, favored with the advantage of collegiate course, and 
2 CONC gifted as he was, had he wished it, it was in his power to have risen to 
2 CONC any official position in Massachusetts in the gift of the people; such, 
2 CONC however, was not his ambition. His was not an ambition "impatient bith of 
2 CONC delays and rivals." He was quite content in the Peaceful walks and 
2 CONC quietude of a farmer's life, and only when the unsought voice of the 
2 CONC people called him to official position did he give any care or thought to 
2 CONC honors or stations.

1 NOTE It is said of Mr. Spooner, that his early educational advantages were 
2 CONC very slight, being limited to what could be had in the schools of his 
2 CONC neighborhood, during wintermonths, and confined to early boyhood years. 
2 CONC These, however, were sufficient to lead him to a higher self-culture, - 
2 CONC reading, observation, adaptability to apply and use, made him in 
2 CONC manhood's life on of the most cultured men of the places in which he 
2 CONC lived. His influence throughlife was given to all enterprises that looked 
2 CONC to the welfare of his fellow men, and carried with it the hight respect 
2 CONC of all who knew him. He was a tall man, of a well formed, large frame.

2 CONT Soon after attaining his majority, Benjamin went to Sandwich, where he 
2 CONC married. From Sandwich he removed to Middleborough, Massachusetts, about 
2 CONC 1720, where he purchased a large tract of land bordering on what has 
2 CONC since been known as Elder's pond, in that part of the township now know 
2 CONC as Lakeville, and here he lived a long and useful life.

1 NOTE John Spooner was the eldest son of John Spooner of Dartmouth. He 
2 CONC inherited from his grandfather, William Spooner, "one fourth part o a 
2 CONC share of all ye undivided lands in ye Township of Dartmouth," together 
2 CONC with two acres "of good meadow lying on ye west side of Sconticutt neck 
2 CONC at ye entering in of ye neck."

2 CONT He became quite independent, leaving, at the time of his death, real 
2 CONC estate valued at 1,700 pounds, and chattels valued at 213:08:6 pound. His 
2 CONC will was executed March 4, 1728, and probated April 12, 1728.

2 CONT Besides being a man of wealth, John Spooner was a man of some influence. 
2 CONC A glance at the records of the town of Dartmouth will reveal the 
2 CONC estimation in which he was held by his townsmen. He served almost 
2 CONC constantly for many years in some official position. it is possible that 
2 CONC it was John. Jr., and not his father, who was chosen Representative to 
2 CONC the General Court in May, 1710.
