He was transferr 1 CONC ed 1 July 1637 to John Coombs of Plymouth. From this it may be inferred th 1 CONC at he was a minor. He settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where he was adm 1 CONC itted freeman on 6 Jun 1654. He was appointed Surveyor of highways in 165 1 CONC 4; he was a member of the Plymouth militia in 1643. William was order 1 CONC ed to pay the debts of his master, Mr. Coombs, and to take care of his chi 1 CONC ldren, August 1670 in a will dated 8 March, with inventory taken 14 Marc 1 CONC h. He resided in Plymouth until about 1660, when he moved to Acushnet, Bri 1 CONC stol county, Massachusetts, where he died in 1684. 1 CONT 1 CONT The earliest record that we have relating to William Spooner, is the assig 1 CONC nment of articles indenturing him by John Holmes to John Coombs, as is se 1 CONC en in Plymouth Colony Records, Vol. XII, p. 19, as follows: 1 CONT 1 CONT "Whereas, William Spooner of Colchester, in the County of Essex by this In 1 CONC denture, bearing date the twenty-seaventh day of March Anno Dmi., 163 1 CONC 7, in the thirteenth year of his Magisty's Raigne, hath put himself appren 1 CONC tice with John Holmes, of New Plymouth, in America, gent. from the first d 1 CONC ay of May next after the date of the said Indenture unto thend terme of s 1 CONC ix yeares thence ensuing with diuers other couenant both pts to be pform 1 CONC ed eich to other by the Indent it doth more plainly appear. His a 1 CONC ge at the time of his indenture is unknown, but it is natural to suppose t 1 CONC hat he was then in his minority. 1 CONT 1 CONT William Spooner then, "of Colchester, in the county of Essex, " (Engla 1 CONC nd or Massachusetts), arrived in the New Plymouth settlement early in t 1 CONC he year 1637. Whence he came, whether with Ann Spooner from Leyden, whet 1 CONC her direct from the mother country, or whether - which we think the most p 1 CONC robable - from the little embryo town of Colchester, Massachusetts Colon 1 CONC y, is not known. Let this much be said, however, that considering his yo 1 CONC uth, (he probably was not more than sixteen or seventeen years old at t 1 CONC he time of his indenture), and considering also the fact that a Mr. Ann Sp 1 CONC ooner (doubtless from Leyden, Holland) was in Salem in 1637, it is more th 1 CONC an probable that william made the journey to America with Ann Spooner a 1 CONC nd Thomas Spooner, whom we suppose to have been his mother and brother, a 1 CONC nd that, on their arrivalin this country, the family separated, Ann and Th 1 CONC omas settling tin Salem, and William seeking his fortune first in the litt 1 CONC le Colchester settlement and subsequently in New Plymouth. 1 CONT 1 CONT William Spooner's life after his apprenticeship to Mr. Coombs, we have, fr 1 CONC om the records, a tolerably well connected account. From the various ord 1 CONC ers of the Court, we conclude that he was a faithful and competent stewar 1 CONC d, entrusted with the administration of his master's estate and the custo 1 CONC dy of his children. These were no common marks of confidence, especial 1 CONC ly amoung the early New England settlers, with whom sturdy self-reliance w 1 CONC as one of the first and greatest of virtues. 1 CONT 1 CONT In the list of August, 1643, William Spooner is mentioned as one "of all t 1 CONC he males that are able to beare arms, from xvi years old to 60 years wi 1 CONC th in the several townships." He was proponded to take up his freedom, J 1 CONC une 7, 1653," and was "sworn and admitted June 6, 1654," and at the same t 1 CONC ime was appointed Surveyor of Highways. He also served on the "Grand Enq 1 CONC uest" 1657 and 1666. 1 CONT 1 CONT He continued to reside in Plymouth until about 1660, when he removed to t 1 CONC he new settlement at Acushnet in the Dartmouth purchase. Here he held la 1 CONC nds in his own name and an interest in the purchase, which were confirm 1 CONC ed to him and to his heirs in their proprietory rights by his will. H 1 CONC is lands and the grants made to his sons and grandson, were situated ne 1 CONC ar The-Head-of-the-River, somewhat to the north and east, thence to the so 1 CONC uth on the east side of the river Acushnet; a small portion of the inherit 1 CONC ance of his son, John, was the West or New Bedford side of the Acushnet, a 1 CONC nd they held land on Sconticut Neck and at Nasquatucket. 1 CONT 1 CONT It is traditionally claimed, (and this claim seems to be well founded,) th 1 CONC at William and his sons built the first mill within Dartmouth bounds, whi 1 CONC ch was located in what is now Acushnet village. 1 CONT 1 CONT William Spooner's educational advantages in the way of "book learning," et 1 CONC c., were certainly very limited. His will, in common with many of the in 1 CONC struments executed by the early colonists, bears the "mark" of illiteracy. 1 CONT 1 CONT Source: Records of William Spooner of Plymouth, Massachusetts & his desce 1 CONC ndants Thomas Spooner, 1883 0 @I00017@ INDI 1 NAME Orasmus. So far as is known, he was the on 1 CONC ly one of the family who did not side with the colonists in their strugg 1 CONC le for independence. And not only this, but he was a pronounced Tory and l 1 CONC oyalist, and from the first mutterings of discontent in 1765, until, in 17 1 CONC 76, when he was forced to flee his home, Ebenezer was a consistent and str 1 CONC enuous opponent of everything but entire obedience to the British Governme 1 CONC nt. Josiah Thomas, and published in The Sen 1 CONC tinel, a Plymouth paper. 1 CONT 1 CONT Died at Plymouth, on Lord's day morning, the Hon. Ephraim Spooner. 1 CONT 1 CONT It would not merely be injustice to the deceased, but injury to the livin 1 CONC g, to suffer the life of a man distinguished by such pre-eminent usefulne 1 CONC ss and active benevolence as was that of Dea. Ephraim Spooner, to pass unn 1 CONC oticed. 1 CONT 1 CONT Dea. Spooner, by his native beneficent disposition, suavity of manners, a 1 CONC nd constant readiness to oblige, early commended himself to the general pu 1 CONC blic. In the intercourse of social life, the expressions of his civility a 1 CONC nd kindness were uncommonly ardent, and to strangers might appear, to be s 1 CONC omewhat overstrained; but they who intimately knew him, can vouch with gre 1 CONC at confidence that he never made a tender of service in which he was not s 1 CONC incere, nor dispensed a favor that did not flow spontaneously from the hea 1 CONC rt, and it may be safely added, that he never intentionally did a wrong th 1 CONC ing nor thought a mean one. His fellow-townsmen, impressed with his wor 1 CONC th and assiduity, introduced him into the various respectable offices of t 1 CONC he town, and his election as Town Clerk for fifty-two years in successio 1 CONC n, and which he retained until his death, amidst the struggles and conflic 1 CONC ts of party, satisfactorily evinces the upright and faithful manner with w 1 CONC hich he discharged the respective offices he sustained. 1 CONT 1 CONT In opposition to the iniquitous system of policy adopted by Great Brita 1 CONC in toward her colonies, his whole soul was engaged. As his industry was co 1 CONC ntinued, nothing in his power was left unessayed to promote, in his langua 1 CONC ge, the glorious cause, and the writer of this article could mention insta 1 CONC nces of sacrifice; he offered to the shrine of his country, and of wonderf 1 CONC ul exertion, he made to procure subsistence for the indigent during the di 1 CONC stressing period of the war of the Revolution, that would excite the admir 1 CONC ation of all men acquainted with common principles of human action. But. h 1 CONC is patriotism, though in a high degree zealous, had not the least tinctu 1 CONC re of bitterness, and in the distribution of his charities, party feeli 1 CONC ng had no participation a pure philanthrophy seemed to have marked him f 1 CONC or her own. 1 CONT 1 CONT Universal good will being so conscious a feature in the character of Deac 1 CONC on Spooner, it is unnecessary to state the warmth of his aflection in t 1 CONC he relation of husband and parent, or the ardor of his attachment as a fri 1 CONC end. 1 CONT 1 CONT In the year 1790 he was appointed by the Executive Council justice of wh 1 CONC at is called the old Court of Common Pleas, and held this office till th 1 CONC at Court was established. Being educated a merchant, his friends cannot cl 1 CONC aim for him great information in legal science; but a quick natural discer 1 CONC nment, and inflexible rectitude of intention, generally guided him to corr 1 CONC ect decisions. If any mistaken bias was discovered in his opinions, it w 1 CONC as unconsciously produced by his strong sympathies with the unfortunate. 1 CONT 1 CONT He represented the town of Plymouth in the Legislature several years wi 1 CONC th his usual activity and perseverance, and finished his political care 1 CONC er as a member of the Executive Council. 1 CONT 1 CONT But the highest point in the character of Dea. Spooner is yet to be name 1 CONC d. He was from full conviction a Christian, and for more than fifty yea 1 CONC rs made a public profession of his religion, and for thirty-four years off 1 CONC iciated in the office of Deacon at the altar of the First Church of Chri 1 CONC st in Plymouth, and the first in New England, without blemish. Imbibing t 1 CONC he heavenly temper of his Master, like him he went about doing good whenev 1 CONC er opportunity presented, without cold calculation on the measure of his a 1 CONC bility; and in the meekness of his dis-position, and mildness of answer, r 1 CONC esembled his beloved disciple. 1 CONT 1 CONT His piety was without bigotry, and big devotion without enthusiasm. No obt 1 CONC rusive polemic divinity; no metaphysical disquisition on the nature of fai 1 CONC th perplexed the simplicity of his creed, or alienated him from his fell 1 CONC ow Christians; piety to God and benevolence to man, being, with him the so 1 CONC le test of orthodoxy and discipleship. 1 CONT 1 CONT But about four weeks before his own death, Dea. Spooner buried his wife wi 1 CONC th whom he, had lived fifty-four years in the most entire harmony, walki 1 CONC ng cheerfully together in the christian course, and in the ordinances of t 1 CONC he Gospel; and the pious fortitude and calm resignation he exhibited on t 1 CONC he occasion, will not admit of doubt that they are again united in shouti 1 CONC ng the divine praises. 1 CONT 1 CONT Accept, venerable shade, this small tribute to the memory of thy friendshi 1 CONC p, greatly beloved in life, deeply lamented in death. 1 CONT 1 CONT Mrs. Spooner, it was said, at the time of her death: 1 CONT 1 CONT In early years having professed her faith in the glorious gospel of the bl 1 CONC essed God, her life was a comment on her profession, displaying the virtu 1 CONC es of industry, charity and discretion, and the graces of piety, humani 1 CONC ty and resignation to the divine will, the sum of all religion. As the nat 1 CONC ural result of a life habituated to the exercises of benevolence and devot 1 CONC ion, when the last solemn scene approached, she quietly resigned her so 1 CONC ul into the hands of her merciful Creator, in humble hope of that etern 1 CONC al rest promised by the great Savior of man to his faithful discipies." 1 CONT 1 CONT Source: Records of the Town of Plymouth, 1743 to 1783: Volume III, Page 4: 1 CONT 1 CONT Ephraim Spooner was son of Thomas and Mary (Nelson) Spooner, and was desce 1 CONC nded from William Spooner, who came from Colchester, England, and settl 1 CONC ed in Plymouth in 1636. He was born in Plymouth in 1735, and for some yea 1 CONC rs was partner in business with Thomas Davis. On the 26th of October, 177 1 CONC 5, he was appointed associate justice of the Inferior Court on Common Plea 1 CONC s, holding that office until July 5, 1790, when he was appointed jud 1 CONC ge of the Court of Common Pleas for Plymouth County, holding his seat unt 1 CONC il the Court was abolished, June 21, 1811. His marriage to a daughter of the house of Spooner occurred s 1 CONC oon after, and we imagine that he made his settlement at Sippican about t 1 CONC he year 1682.[CI:1182:?4:CI] 1 CONT 1 CONT The first migration of the children of Deborah Wing from Sandwich was prob 1 CONC ably that of her son John when he removed to what afterward became Harwi 1 CONC ch some twenty years after the settlement at Sandwich in 1637. The secon 1 CONC d, and the first to the Westward, was that of John, son of Daniel, who bec 1 CONC ame one of the very earliest settlers on the western shores of Buzzard Ba 1 CONC y, probably as early as 1680. This settlement was first known as Sippica 1 CONC n, afterward, Rochester, and from Rochester were carved the towns of Wareh 1 CONC am, Marion, etc. The earliest settlements were made at and around the mou 1 CONC th of the Sippican River where it empties its dark waters into Buzzard Ba 1 CONC y, and the neck of land extending into the bay was for many years kno 1 CONC wn as "Wing's Neck." It is almost direct 1 CONC ly opposite the home of Ex-President Cleveland at Gray Gables. The princip 1 CONC al settlement near at hand is the village of Marion, with a populati 1 CONC on of possibly one thousand, the principal occupation of which is the ente 1 CONC rtainment of summer visitors.
