Gen. Davis Tilson was born in Rockland, Me., April 14, 1830, and obtained his education at the West Point Military Academy. He was obliged to resign, after two years, owing to an accident, which rendered the amputation of one of his lower limbs necessary.

In 1857 Gen. Tilson was elected to the Maine Legislature, and the succeeding year was adjutant general of the state.

He was appointed collector of eustoms for the Waldoboro district by President Lincoln, which position he resigned in 1860 to become captain of the 2d Maine Battery. He was detained in Maine during the winter owing to the threatened difficulty with England, but finally reached Washington in April, 1862, and was assigned to the
