Subject: origin of the Spooner name - an alternative

I note on your web site that you state that the origin of the surname Spooner was " a maker of spoons". This may be true in some cases but you may wish to consider this option. In Old English, that is after the departure of the Romans around 400AD and up to and including the Viking invasions the name Spooner was given to a maker of roofing tiles or "Spones" in Old English. Thus the Spooner name may well be Romano-british as the local pre-roman tribes only had thatch or a grass sod roof. It was the Romans who introduced roof tiles so I assume that the first person to be called Spooner was a Romanised British tribesman circa 200-400 AD who copied the skill of roof tile making. He possibly made them out of wood instead of clay. Perhaps the current word for a wooden roof tile "shingle" is derived from the original Old English word.
